May 18: Koza receives Volunteer Award [The Observer]
“Be prepared’’ is the motto Boy Scouts have embraced for decades. La Grande Boy Scout volunteer Mary Koza, however, was not prepared for the news she received. Koza learned she will be presented with one of the highest honors given adult volunteers by the Boy Scouts of America — the Silver Beaver Award.

May 18: EOU hires new athletic director [EOU release]
Eastern Oregon University President Phillip Creighton announced today that Robert Cashell has been selected as the Mountaineers' new athletic director. Cashell has served as the Director of Athletics at Western Montana College of the University of Montana since 1996. He replaces Dr. Peggy Anderson, who will return to teaching as a full-time professor after a one-year sabbatical.

May 7: Professor's expertise draws BBC [The Observer]
A four-man British television production crew, under contract to the British Broadcasting Corporation, visited La Grande Saturday. Ancient Greece and Persia were on the minds of the members of the Atlantic Productions team, not the spring beauty of the Grande Ronde Valley. The group came to interview Eastern Oregon University history professor A. Shapur Shahbazi.
