Clothing drive concludes, exceeding expectations
Thanks to an overwhelming response from the community, the Office of Multicultural Affairs at Eastern Oregon University and the Northeast Oregon Area Health Education Center (NEOAHEC) have collected enough clothing to fill two large moving trucks. Approximately 1,600 boxes, all containing necessities that no one should have to go without – items like toothpaste, blankets, clean shirts and pants will be sent to the thousands of people left homeless in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
EOU's drive to help victims of Hurricane Katrina draws overwhelming response —
By Dick Mason/Observer staff writer
Eastern Oregon University's Rachael Steward had no choice. The overwhelming generosity of Union County residents was so great that at 1 p.m. Monday she put the brakes on a clothing drive for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
"We have to focus now on getting the clothes to Louisiana and Mississippi. That is what is important,'' said Steward, EOU interim coordinator of multicultural affairs.
EOU Foundation accepting cash donations to aid relief efforts
The Eastern Oregon University Foundation is accepting donations to help with the relief efforts for survivors of Hurricane Katrina. The Foundation has created a designated account to accept cash donations. All donations will be transferred to the Red Cross who will use them to help the survivors of hurricane Katrina. The EOU Foundation will charge no fees for administration so that one-hundred percent of donated funds will go directly to support the people severely affected by the disaster.
* The Division of Distance Education's involvement in offering classes online to students affected by the hurricane is fully underway. More information will be posted to this site as soon as possible.
