PSU professor to address turmoil in Middle East

LA GRANDE, Oregon – Eastern Oregon University and the Blue Mountain Forum will sponsor a program on the Middle East with Dr. John Damis, professor at Portland State University, on Thursday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. in Huber Auditorium on the EOU campus.

The title of the program is, “Turmoil in the Middle East: A Critical Look at Lebanan, Iran and Iraq.” Dr. Damis is a professor of political science and international studies in the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government at PSU.
He is also the director of the university’s Middle East Studies Center.

He has studied and worked in the Middle East and North Africa for five years and is the author of four books and monographs and over 30 articles and chapters on the politics and international relations of the Middle East and North Africa.

A Portland native, Dr. Damis graduated with high honors from Harvard College in 1962. He earned a master’s degree in Middle Eastern studies from Harvard in 1964, and received his Ph.D. in international relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in 1970.

From 1975 to 1977, he worked for the Department of State in Washington, D.C., and was a visiting professor of government at Harvard University in 1986-87.

In 1993-94 he served as a consultant to the Identification Commission of the United Nations Mission for a Referendum in the Western Sahara and spent the academic year 1997-98 as a senior Fulbright research scholar in Morocco. In 2000 he was decorated by H.M. King Mohammed VI of Morocco.
