La Grande, Oregon – Every October, an entire week is devoted to celebrating one thing at Eastern Oregon University: The tradition of Homecoming.

A crowd gathers in the quad, enjoying the sunshine
and the sounds of local country music talent, DeLeah
Wiles. The concert was sponsored by Eastern Student
Entertainment as part of Oktoberfest.

And this year, EOU had the return of Oktoberfest to celebrate as well. German sausages, live music and student booths all contributed to the festive atmosphere.

“Homecoming and Oktoberfest this year was a great success,” said Bennie Moses, EOU alumni coordinator. “There was something for everyone to enjoy and it is because of the combined efforts of so many people and organizations, including, the Alumni Association, University Advancement, Athletics, Student Activities, ESE, and the community.”

Homecoming 2005 provided a unique opportunity for alumni, student, faculty and staff to connect with the community. Everything from athletic events to live theater was offered during the week-long celebration on campus.

Outstanding EOU athletes and alumni were recognized during an emotional ceremony on Friday, Oct. 21, in McKenzie Theatre. Recipients of the alumni awards this year were: Keith Baker, (Distinguished Alumni Award); Don Heuberger and Michael Meek, (University Merit Award); Doug Campbell, (University Service Award); and the Union County Commission, (Outstanding Community Partner Award).

The Homecoming football game found
the Mountaineers victorious with a 38 to 7
win over Rocky Mountain College.

Individuals who were inducted into the 2005 Athletic Hall of Fame are: Charles “Chuck” Holliday; Dennis Hunt; Colleen Wigle-Hunt; and Talia Hackney-Welch. Two EOU teams also received the honor this year: the 1974 volleyball team and the 1979 Cross Country Ski Team.

Under clear skies, the Mountaineer football team took on Rocky Mountain College on Saturday, Oct. 22, winning the Homecoming game 38 to 7. A 5th quarter celebration provided a relaxing atmosphere for alumni and friends to mingle after the game, bringing the weekend Homecoming celebration to a close.
