David Axelrod
LA GRANDE, Oregon – David Axelrod, professor of English and writing at Eastern Oregon University, has been named a finalist for the 2006 Stafford/Hall Award for Poetry presented by the Oregon Book Awards.
His collection of poetry, “The Cartographer’s Melancholy, (Eastern Washington University Press), placed at the top in the category with the work of five other Oregon authors.
The winner for will be announced at the 20th Annual Oregon Book Awards ceremony on Friday, Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the Portland Art Museum. National Book Award winner Barry Lopez will serve as the master of ceremonies.

Other nominees for the award in poetry are Dorianne Laux, of Eugene, Paulann Petersen, Vern Rutsala, Floyd Skloot, and Matt Yurdana, all of Portland.
“It really is an honor to have my book included with such a wonderful group of authors,” Axelrod said.
Axelrod will join the other nominees for the Oregon Book Awards Author Tour early next year to give readings in libraries in rural communities across the state including La Grande, Klamath Falls, Roseburg and Astoria.
The authors will also be featured for a live radio interview on Portland’s KBOO Community Radio on Oct. 30 at 10 p.m.
The Oregon Book Awards was established in 1987 and is a program of Literary Arts, a statewide, nonprofit organization. Awards are presented annually for the finest accomplishments by Oregon writers in the genres of poetry, fiction, literary nonfiction, drama and young readers literature.
