LA GRANDE, Oregon – Eastern Oregon University’s student-edited literary magazine, “Oregon East,” will celebrate the publication of its 2006 issue at a reading and gala on Tuesday, October 24 at 7 p.m. in the Alumni Room in Ackerman Hall, Room 208.

Everyone is welcome to attend and there is no charge.  Students will receive complimentary copies of the magazine and non-students may purchase the magazine for $5 on site and at local bookstores.

“Oregon East” had a humble beginning at Eastern Oregon College when it first appeared as “The Middle R” in 1950.  It evolved not only in name from “The Middle R,” “The Oregon Collegiate Review” and “Underpass,” to the present-day “Oregon East.”

The magazine has changed its shape, size, and binding, but its hallmark as a showcase of excellent student writing has always been consistent.  The only consecutively published student literary magazine east of the Cascade Mountains in Oregon, “Oregon East” continues its proud tradition.

“The artistic richness in ‘Oregon East’ embodies a certain freedom, a certain richness of character, character that can only be found here in eastern Oregon—from the EOU campus to the rocky banks of Wallowa Lake, from the jagged peaks of the Elkhorns and the Blues to the dusty cliffs of Hells Canyon and the Snake,” said EOU alum and former “Oregon East” editor Jeremy Booth.

The editors of the 2006 edition, Caitlin Mack, Katie Taylor, and Donnie Henderson, along with “Oregon East” interns Jennifer Byars, Becky Collins, Jennifer Colton, Deborah Davey, Amanda Reed, and Haley Tucker, should be commended for their efforts, along with every student whose work appears in volume XXXVII. The reading and gala is being held in celebration of their efforts.
