PORTLAND, Ore. — Kris Asla, public relations officer of Eastern Oregon University’s chapter of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, participated in a Partnering For Success Workshop August 5-6 at the Red Lion Hotel in Portland.

The workshop featured advanced skill development in enhancing chapter public relations and communication, recruiting and involving faculty and professional staff, insuring chapter officer succession and continuity and increasing member participation. The two-day session was fourth in a series of five major training workshops scheduled across the country in 2006. Each participant was provided financial support by Phi Kappa Phi Headquarters to attend the workshop.

Asla, admissions counselor at EOU, represented one of 30 other chapters from across the nation to share ideas and to learn proven strategies for making their respective chapters operate at maximum efficiency.

“EOU’s chapter of Phi Kappa Phi has been active for a long time, and with one of our very own students receiving Phi Kappa Phi graduate fellowship last year, we hope to continue to see a vibrant and active chapter in the future,” Asla said.

Cierra Olivia Thomas-Williams was awarded a Fellowship from the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi for the 2006-2007 academic year. Thomas-Williams graduated from EOU in 2005 and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in gender studies and anthropology at Indiana University-Bloomington.

Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 and is headquartered in Baton Rouge, La. It is the nation’s oldest, largest and most selective all-discipline honor society. The organization inducts annually more than 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni and the society has chapters on nearly 300 select college and university campuses in North America and the Philippines. Membership is by invitation only to the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students and 7.5 percent of juniors. Faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction also qualify.

The Society has awarded approximately $12 million since the inception of its awards program in 1932. Today, more than $700,000 is awarded annually to qualifying members and non-members through fellowships, undergraduate study abroad scholarships, member and chapter awards and grants for local and national literacy initiatives.
