La Grande, Oregon – Eastern Oregon University is currently accepting applications for two new scholarships: the Daniel Rama Memorial Scholarship and the Juan Young Scholarship.
Dave and Judy Rama, of Baker City, recently established the Daniel Rama Memorial Scholarship in honor of their son who was killed in a vehicle accident on June 21, 2002. Rama was a firefighter working for Grayback Forestry and was traveling to Colorado to help fight the Hayman fire when the accident occurred. Four other firefighters were also killed.
The $2,000 Daniel Rama Memorial Scholarship is intended to help an EOU student who has firefighting experience and has financial need.
"We are proud to be able to offer these new scholarships and are very appreciative of the generous support of the Rama family and the Juan Young Trust," said Lyle Schwarz, president of the EOU Foundation. "Scholarships are so important to help students achieve their degree and prepare for successful careers."
The Juan Young Trust will provide two, $1,500 scholarships for the 2005-06 academic year. The trust was established according to the wishes of the late Juan Young, a long-time Kienow’s Food Store employee and stockholder.
At the time of application, recipients must be under 21 years of age, be a resident of Oregon, and be enrolled as a full-time student at EOU. Preference will be given to students who are of direct lineage to former employees of Kienow’s Food Stores, Inc.
Students interested in applying for these new scholarships should contact the Financial Aid Office at (541) 962-3550. Applications are due Oct. 25.
Established in 1964, the EOU Foundation is a private, non-profit foundation, created to support the mission and vision of the University. Over the past four decades, the Foundation has become a vital force for higher education in eastern Oregon, with an endowment of over $2.2 million.
