LA GRANDE, Oregon – Eastern Oregon University faculty and staff have significantly increased their grant writing efforts over the past year. The EOU Office of Grants and Sponsored Programs, (OGSP), processed 47 grant applications for the 2005-06 year, (July 1, 2005 to June 30, 2006), requesting $18.6 million.
To date 27, (57 percent), of the 47 grants have been approved for a total of $1.7 million. Fourteen have been disapproved or withdrawn, and six are still pending notification. Of the 27 grants approved so far, 20 were new grant applications, as opposed to renewals of multiyear grants, ongoing grants, supplementals, or no-cost extensions. Seven new grants were approved in 2004-05. Fourteen grants have already been processed for 2006-07, and many more are in the works.
“I am very pleased with the momentum Office of Grants and Sponsored Programs director Michael Sirrine has generated over the past year,” said John Miller, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. “The quality of Eastern's faculty and staff is reflected in the success we have had in seeking grant funding for research, teaching and learning enhancements, regional service and economic development.”
Anna Cavinato, professor of chemistry, was the most prolific writer of new grants. Cavinato wrote six new grants and her efforts were followed closely by Nancy Knowles, associate professor of English and writing, Virginia Bertels, director of the Headstart program at EOU, Jeff Woodford, associate professor of chemistry, and John Winn, director of The Community School of the Arts at EOU. Twenty-one faculty and staff members made new or renewal grant applications. This does not include multi-year grants approved in prior years.
A series of short training events has been planned for those interested in finding out more about grant writing and EOU policies and procedures pertaining to grant writing, or for those interested in honing their skills. The sessions will provide an introduction to grant writing, searches, budget development and policy and procedure.
These workshops will culminate with another grant proposal development workshop on April 26, 2007, facilitated by Peggy Lowry. Lowry is the director of the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research Compliance at Oregon State University, a department that oversees approximately $177 million in grants awarded annually.
OGSP also wants to form an ad-hoc faculty advisory committee to help inform and drive the evolution of grant writing at EOU. Interested faculty should contact Michael Sirrine, director of OGSP, at 962-3700, or at msirrine@eou.edu. Visit the OGSP Web site at www.eou.edu/ogsp.
