La Grande, Oregon – An opening reception for exhibiting artists Calla Thompson and Tamara Dimitri will be held from 7-9 p.m. in Nightingale Gallery at Eastern Oregon University on Saturday, Oct. 1.
"Thompson and Dimitri do dynamic work using mixed-media installation as their medium of choice. The work each artist will present here at the Nightingale Gallery is both conceptually challenging and visually striking and we are pleased to be able to present it to the EOU and eastern Oregon communities," said Cory Peeke, Nightingale Gallery director.
Thompson, a professor of photography at the University of Maryland, will give a free presentation as a visiting artist on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 6:30 p.m. in Huber Auditorium. Her work is shown around the United States, Canada and South America. Solo exhibitions have included those at Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography in Toronto, and the Soho 20 Gallery in New York. Thompson’s work involves semi-narrative scenes that suggest the physical and psychological struggles of her characters.
Dimitri’s art is inspired by the landscapes of the places she has lived, from the mid-western countryside, to the southwest desert and the woods of the northeast. She explores the geological features of a particular place and the human relationship with those places. Dimitri received a graduate fellowship at Cornell University in New York and has been a youth workshop instructor at the Arizona Museum for Youth. She lives in Salem, Conn.
Nightingale Gallery hours are 11 a.m.- 4 p.m., Monday through Friday and 12-5 p.m. on Saturday. Thompson and Dimitri will have their installation art on display through Oct. 29. The exhibit is free and open to the public. For more information contact Cory Peeke at (541) 962-3584.
