La Grande, Oregon — The acclaimed Synergy Brass Quintet from Boston will perform in concert on Thursday, Sept. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in McKenzie Theatre at Eastern Oregon University.
Tickets are available at Sunflower Books in La Grande and can also be purchased from La Grande High School band students. Tickets are $8 for the general public and $6 for students.
The five brass players will perform a variety of music on Thursday evening, showcasing pieces by J.S. Bach and Thomas Tallis and numbers by Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, and George Gershwin.
Synergy will participate in a free educational workshop for area high school band students at 9:45 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 30 in the LHS band room. All regional high school students are invited to attend the workshop. The concert and workshop are sponsored by the LHS Band and ArtsEast, home of the Eastern Oregon Regional Arts Council in La Grande.
Synergy has been bringing an exciting new brand of chamber music to audiences since 1996. Their high artistic standard and unstoppable energy have made them one of the country’s finest brass ensembles. Synergy’s touring schedule has taken them across the United States for performances at major music festivals such as Ravinia and Tanglewood and abroad.
Synergy dedicates time to the education of young musicians wherever they tour, performing numerous clinics and workshops across the country. Through their educational workshop at LHS, Synergy members will continue their mission to help tomorrow’s musicians by sharing their passion for all types of music.
Trumpet player Chris O’Hara is a graduate of The Boston Conservatory and Boston University. He has performed in the United States, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, and the Federation of Russia.
Jonathan Hurrell, on French horn, is also a graduate of Boston University and spent most of his childhood in Texas, though he was born in England. He has premiered numerous solo, chamber, and orchestral works and has performed in ALEA III, Boston Civic Orchestra, Boston Metropolitan Orchestra, and Boston University Symphony Orchestra as principal horn.
Nicholas Gonzalez, on tuba, began playing the euphonium at age eight in Houston, Texas, and gradually moved on to its bigger cousin, the tuba. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, he went on to perform with the Eastman Philharmonia and Rochester Philharmonic.
Trombonist Mark Broschinsky is a graduate of the University of Utah and New England Conservatory and is a native of Salt Lake City. He has performed with the Utah Symphony Orchestra, Rhode Island Philharmonic and the Orchestra at Temple Square, with which he toured, performing with the renowned Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
Bobby Thorp, on trumpet, first started his career in Washington, D.C., performing with jazz and rock bands. A native of Norman, Okla., he has opened for Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Patti Smith, Joe Strummer of the Clash, and Adam “MCA” Yauch of the Beastie Boys. He graduated from The Boston Conservatory and University of Maryland and has taught at the Shenandoah Conservatory, Shenandoah Arts Academy, and the Boston University Tanglewood Institute.
