LA GRANDE, Oregon – All aboard the H.M.S. Majestic for a riotous adventure in “Peril on the High Seas,” a full-length melodrama set in the roaring twenties opening at Eastern Oregon University Sept. 7-9.
Walk down the gangway into Schwarz Theatre for the production presented by Theatre in the Ronde and sponsored by The Community School of the Arts at EOU. Show times are 7:30 each evening, with an additional 2 p.m. matinee performance on Sept. 9.
The story unfolds around heroine and heiress Merry Ann Sweet, who has no idea that she is the intended victim of a kidnapping plot schemed up by the villainous Snively Swine. With his partner, the slinky and exotic Aracnia Webb, Swine disguises himself as Sir Reginald Rottentot, a British nobleman, in order to gain the confidence of Merry and her flapper friends, Mitzi, Ritzy and Ditzy. Instead, Merry falls for a handsome waiter, Cary De Mille, but the ship's policy prohibits crew from becoming involved with the passengers.
Swine launches his kidnapping scheme. Can the love-stricken Cary save Merry? It's up to the passengers – movie star Mary Pickaxe, gossip columnist Hedda Hooper, detective Willy Ketchum and more – to help Cary put the damper on Swine.
Written by Billy St. John, “Peril on the High Seas” is directed by EOU alum Shannon Rempel. Rempel graduated from EOU in 2004 and is planning to enter the master of teacher education program at EOU.
So pick up a bag of popcorn at the concession stand (for throwing, not eating) and join Theatre in the Ronde for this wacky ride – boos and hisses are expected! Tickets for all performances are available at Sunflower Books and online at www.eou.edu/csa.
