La Grande, Oregon – Dr. Marilyn A. Levine has accepted the position of dean of Arts and Sciences at Eastern Oregon University, succeeding interim Sarah Witte as of August 1.
Levine is a graduate of the University of Chicago, the University of Hawaii, and San Diego State University. Her graduate degrees focus on modern Chinese history and Vietnamese history. She has published 2 books and over three dozen articles. Levine has spent the last 16 years teaching at Lewis-Clark State College, in Lewiston, Idaho, where she became the division chair of Social Sciences in 2001.
“I was very impressed with the academic quality of the faculty, their dedication to teaching, scholarship and the community,” Levine said of EOU. “The leadership at the University is forward looking and I sincerely hope that I can make a contribution to the campus when I arrive in August.”
Levine has served on numerous boards of directors including the Idaho Humanities Council. She served as chair of the Council of Conferences for the Association for Asian Studies and executive secretary of the Western Conference of the Association for Asian Studies. In 2004, Levine became president of H-NET, (Humanities and Social Sciences Online) the world’s largest society of teachers and scholars dedicated to utilizing the educational potential of the Internet. From 2003 to 2004 Levine served as co-president of the Women in Higher Education Roundtable.
In 2004 Levine taught aboard the Universe Explorer, part of the Semester at Sea program sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh. She has been a guest professor at universities all over the world including the University of Heidelberg and the Hong Kong Baptist University. She is the author of two published books and more than 30 articles. Levine has also created numerous Web sites providing resources for teachers, researchers and other professionals including the Chinese Biographical Database.
Levine has been involved with the Northwest region in the National Consortium for Teaching About Asia, which is funded by the Freeman Foundation. This program has brought over $100,000 to rural teachers and schools over the past four years.
