LA GRANDE – Looking for something that the entire family can do together this summer? Check out the new and existing programs in theatre, music and visual arts made available to children and adults throughout the region by The Community School of the Arts at Eastern Oregon University.
Theatre in the Ronde, a community theatre troupe, begins its third summer season in August with three full productions staged with casts made up of community members of every age. The first show to hit the stage in McKenzie Theatre is “The Fantasticks,” opening August 11, 12 and 18, 19. This full-length Broadway production will feature high school and college age actors. All performances begin at 7:30 p.m.
“The Music Man Junior” a specially designed version of the Broadway hit, “The Music Man,” is geared for young actors and opens August 24-26 at 7:30 p.m. and a 2:30 p.m. matinee on August 26.

Theatre in the Ronde’s final show of the summer, “Peril on the High Seas,” is a funny melodrama set in the 1920s aboard a ship sailing for London. The cast will be comprised of adult community members. The show opens September 7-9 at 7:30 p.m. and a 2 p.m. matinee on September 9.
New programs offered this year by CSA include a Kids University, Kids Violin Camp and the WesCom Journalism Camp for high school students. The Kids University runs July 10 through August 4 and is open to children entering the second through fifth grade. From creative writing to the basics of music, the daily classes are designed with a theme targeting a specific age group. EOU students and community members will teach the classes under the direction of EOU faculty.
Children ages six through 12 with less than two years of previous experience playing the violin can register for the Kids Violin Camp. Students will learn the basic techniques of playing the instrument from EOU music instructor, Lisa Robertson. The camp runs August 7-11.
The same week, high school students interested in news writing can take advantage of the WesCom Journalism Camp, sponsored by Western Communications and The La Grande Observer. Students will be introduced to everything from feature writing, sports writing, editing, layout, photography and design, all leading up to the final project of the camp when participants will produce a small newspaper that will be published by The Observer.
