LA GRANDE, Oregon – The Community School for the Arts at Eastern Oregon University is gearing up for summer activities including a new Journalism Camp.

Stepping forward with a major grant, Western Communications, Inc. awarded $2,500 to CSA for the next three years to partially fund the camp. The camp is designed for high school students and will focus on the basics needed to produce a newspaper including feature writing, sports writing, editing, layout, newspaper photography and printing.  The camp, held August 7-11, will produce a small newspaper that will be published in the La Grande Observer.

“The journalism camp is just one of our many programs this summer,” said John Winn, director of the CSA. “It is a great example of how contributions are used to fund new and existing CSA programs.”

The Community School of the Arts at Eastern Oregon University has also launched its first major fund raising campaign. Launched the beginning of May, the Friends of the Arts program will continue through the end of June and will be an annual event each year hereafter.

Community members can show their support for high quality arts programs provided by CSA by becoming a member. Five different levels of giving are available and all funds received will support and enhance CSA programming.

“CSA is designed to be self-supporting, but the reality is that fixed costs are high when an organization is just starting out,” Winn said.

An online auction will be held in conjunction with the giving campaign on June 5-25. Items up for bid include donations made by local businesses, and package trips to Disneyland, Europe, Africa and other exotic locations.

“Without a mechanism for consistent fund raising, it will be difficult to keep fees low and continue to provide quality programming. This campaign will help us to become fully self-sufficient. We also hope to eventually be able to offer scholarships to those who can’t afford to participate,” Winn said.

CSA provides classes in theatre, music and the visual arts to children and adults throughout the region.

“The programs that we offer are top quality in this community,” Winn said.
