Luz Villarroel — Director of Diversity

Luz Villarroel

Luz Maciel Villarroel, Ph.D., is  EOU's new Director of Diversity. Villarroel is from the Portland area where she has worked for the past five and a half years as a bilingual high school counselor with the Beaverton School District. Prior to that she was a counselor at Portland Community College, working with Spanish and other language-speaking students. She began work on campus in July.

“Luz’s experience and skills will help us address and work with all aspects of our diversity programs, from students, to faculty and staff, to the community," said EOU President Khosrow Fatemi.

A 1973 graduate of the Oregon College of Education, Villarroel’s specialization is in secondary education in Spanish. She earned her master’s degree and later her doctorate from Oregon State University. Her background is in administration, working in recruitment and advising, utilizing her skills as a tutor, teacher, interpreter, mentor and advocate.

Villarroel is a long-time resident of the Pacific Northwest. She served as assistant dean of admission at Portland’s Reed College from 1996-97, and as an advisor, counselor and recruiter in the College Assistant Migrant Program at her alma mater. A volunteer for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Leadership Institute, Villarroel is also involved with many other community service activities. She has taught various higher education courses focusing on cultural awareness, and her experience includes working with low income and at-risk migrant students in elementary through secondary levels.
