La Grande, Oregon – Barbara Roberts, former governor of Oregon, will speak at Eastern Oregon University on May 25 at 7 p.m. in Ackerman Hall Room 210. A reception will follow.
Born in Corvallis, Roberts is the first woman to hold the office of governor in Oregon. In the 1991 race she defeated David Frohnmayer and Al Mobley. Prior to her election, Roberts became Oregon’s House of Representatives Majority Leader and then Secretary of State. During her 1991 to 1995 term as governor, Roberts focused on public education, human rights and services, environmental management, and streamlining government at the state level.
Currently, Roberts is teaching at Portland State University where she has served as the associate director of leadership development since 1998 for the School of Government. She is on the board of trustees for the Oregon Hospice Association, the Human Rights Campaign and other not-for-profit organizations.
While at EOU, Roberts will address the meaning of civic engagement and citizen responsibility, how they helped shape Oregon’s history, and how critical they are now to Oregon’s future. She will also speak with several classes on campus during the day.
“I am looking forward to coming to La Grande and helping in this year’s celebration for Eastern Oregon University’s 75th anniversary,” Roberts said. “The positive impact EOU has had on the eastern part of the state and its citizens is broad and deep, and it does not end at the Cascades.
All over Oregon, EOU graduates are contributing to every facet of Oregon life and Oregon leadership.”
Roberts’ evening presentation is free and open to the public. For more information contact the University Advancement Office at (541) 962-3740 or at advancement@eou.edu.
