LA GRANDE, Oregon – The following students received recognition for individual achievement on the state qualifying exams administered during the Regional High School Math Competition at EOU on April 18. Students who placed first, second and third received medals. All listed students who participated in the Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-calculus, and Calculus categories will be invited to participate in the state competition at Portland State University in May.
Approximately 250 students participated this year, representing schools from Burnt River, Dayville, Enterprise, Imbler, Joseph, La Grande, Pine Eagle, Prairie City, Providence Academy and Vale.
Pre – Algebra:

The EOU math competition also has a team competition component. Students compete in individual events to earn points for their team. The team events are divided between “Large Schools” and “Small Schools.” This year’s “Large School” team championship went to La Grande, and Dayville took home the “Small School” team championship.

The final team competition event is a “math relay”. The top three teams (for each school category) received trophies. The results of the relay appear below.

As mentioned above, based on these team events, the overall team championships went to La Grande and Dayville. Both of these teams received plaques to commemorate their achievements. In addition, this year EOU has offered scholarships to the first-place winners from the top categories of the state-qualifying exam.
Theresa Nguyen, of Burnt River, Joshua Sweigert and Marcus Smithe, both of Imbler, the first-place winners in the Pre-Calculus and Calculus categories, have been offered scholarships in the amount of $3,000 per year, renewable for up to 12 terms of undergraduate study at EOU.
