La Grande, Oregon - A four-day celebration beginning March 9 will mark the official inauguration of Eastern Oregon University’s 10th President, Dr. Khosrow Fatemi.

The celebration starts on Wednesday, March 9 with a reunion of EOU alumni authors and a reading at 8 p.m. in Schwarz Theatre in Loso Hall. On March 10, EOU alum and noted jazz musician, Kit Garoutte, will take the stage with the EOU Jazz Ensemble for an evening of entertainment. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in Groth Recital Hall, in Loso Hall. Cost is $3 for students and $5 for general admission.

“The Future of Higher Education” will be the focus of a symposium beginning at 3 p.m., with Dr. Stephen Weber, president of San Diego State University, and David Frohnmayer, president of the University of Oregon, on Friday, March 11, in Huber Auditorium in the new EOU Science Center. Friday evening, EOU students will present a cabaret-style revue entitled, “Cabar-ETC II,” at 8 p.m. in McKenzie Theatre. A pre-performance reception will be held in the Alumni Room in Ackerman Hall at 7 p.m.

 

Saturday morning, March 12, at 10:30 a.m., a ceremony will be held for EOU’s new residence halls. As part of the ceremony a time capsule will be dedicated commemorating EOU’s 75th Anniversary. EOU has buried several time capsules since 1929 and opened them as part of the 50th and 75th Anniversaries. The Investiture Ceremony begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, and will include speakers from the State Board of Higher Education, the Governor’s Office and State Legislature. Students, alumni, faculty and the EOU Foundation will bring special greetings. During the ceremony President Fatemi will receive the symbols of the office, including a newly commissioned mace and EOU medallion, and will be officially invested as President of EOU.

Presidential Inaugurations are a university tradition that usually take place within a year after a President assumes office. Fatemi has served as EOU’s President since May 26, 2004.

                                                                                                                                                                       

Fatemi served as dean of the campus and professor of international business at San Diego State University-Imperial Valley from 1998-2004. Prior to his career at SDSU, Fatemi was the dean of both the College of Business Administration and the Graduate School of International Trade and Business Administration at Texas A&M International University. He is the founding editor of the Global Economy Quarterly and the International Trade Journal, and served on the Board of Directors for the U.S. – Mexico Chamber of Commerce. Fatemi succeeded Dr. Dixie Lund, who served as interim president after the departure of Phillip Creighton.
