THEA 265: TECH TA – LIGHTING

Catalog description: Demonstration and practice in the use of lighting equipment for the stage. Students will hang, focus, repair, and manipulate lights for current productions. Includes 15 hours of lab work outside of class.
Course requirements: The student will be required to assist in the lighting of the EOU Theatre Program productions for the quarter. The work will include use of hand tools needed to maintain and use lighting instruments, working with the onstage rigging system and on the catwalks while learning hanging and focusing techniques. The student will also be required to spend fifteen hours outside of class in same type of work.

Materials: Student will be furnished with proper tools for the work to be done. Student will need to furnish a set of work clothes, appropriate foot attire and gloves to protect their hands.

Disclaimer: Class schedule/assignments may be altered during the course of the term as needed.
Means of assessment:
1] Student’s knowledge of the different types of lighting instruments and their parts will be assessed through written examination.
2] Student’s understanding of lighting procedures such as hanging and focusing will be assessed through practical application during lab hours working on department productions.
3] Student’s understanding of lighting design techniques will be assessed by practical application of knowledge during creation of lighting for department production as well in class projects.
4] Student’s appreciation of theatrical production will be assessed through the writing of three reaction papers.
Grading method: Attendance and participation 200 pts. (10 pts. per class)
Examination 200 pts.
Review of EUO productions 300 pts. (100 pts. each)
Practicum requirements 300 pts. (20 pts. per hour)
TOTAL 1200 pts.
95% - 100% = A
91% - 95% = A-
87% - 91% = B+
83% - 87% = B
79% - 83% = B-
75% - 79% = C+
71% - 75% = C
67% - 71% = C-
63% - 67% = D+
60% - 63% = D
Below 60% = F
Attendance/Lateness Policy: Students are responsible for attending class every time that it is held. Absences will result in a loss of ten points. The only exception is mandatory university sponsored events and THEN, ONLY if I know in advance. Work due on a day that you miss will be accepted with a 10% deduction per each period it is late. Three times late will qualify for one absence.
