THEA 264: TECH TA – SCENIC CONSTRUCTION

Catalog description: Introduction to techniques and tools of designing and mounting stage productions. Lab content based on currently scheduled shows. Includes 20 hours of lab work besides scheduled class time.

Course requirements: The students will be required to assist in the construction and lighting of the EOU Theatre department for the quarter. The work will include use of hand tools and power tools, working with wood and painting techniques. The student will also be required to spend twenty hours outside of class in same type of work.

Materials: Student will be furnished with proper tools for the work to be done. Student will need to furnish a set of work clothes, appropriate foot attire and gloves to protect their hands.

Week One:                     Introduction to syllabus and class requirements.

(January 5)                       Organization of Scene Shop.

                                        Clean the Scene Shop

                                        MANDATORY: Saturday, January 8 @11:00 a.m. Scene Shop. Learning to use and 

                                        respect power tools. (This will count toward your lab hours)

Week Two:                     Costume Shop renovations.

(January 10 & 12)            Relocation of  Scenic elements.

Week Three:                  Building a flat.

(January 18 & 20)            Building a platform.

Disclaimer: Class schedule/assignments may be altered during the course of the term as needed.

Means of assessment:

1] Students’ knowledge of tools used in scenery construction will be assessed through written examination.

2] Students’ understanding of constructions techniques will be assessed through practical application during construction of

    scenery for department productions.

3] Students’ understanding of basic painting techniques will be assessed by practical application of knowledge during

    creation of scenery for department production as well in class painting project.

Grading method:              Attendance and participation                  200 pts. (10 pts. per class)

                                          Quality of work/Attention to detail         250 pts.

                                          Review of EUO productions                    200 pts. (100 pts. each)

                                          91% - 95% = A-

                                          87% - 91% = B+

                                          79% - 83% = B-

                                          75% - 79% = C+

                                          71% - 75% = C

                                          67% - 71% = C-

                                          63% - 67% = D+

                                          60% - 63% = D

                                          Below 60% = F

Attendance/Lateness Policy: Students are responsible for attending class every time that it is held. Absences will result in a loss of ten points. The only exception is mandatory university sponsored events and THEN, ONLY if I know in advance. Work due on a day that you miss will be accepted with a 10% deduction per each period it is late.
