Catalog Description: Basic theory and techniques of scene design for the stage, to include drafting, sketching, rendering, modeling, and presentation techniques.
Course Requirements: The students will be required to perform exercises designed to stimulate their imagination and help articulate emotional responses. They will be required to read, interpret and execute a scenic design for two play scripts chosen by the professor. The design will include sketches, floor plans, and models. Students will also be required to attend both of the EOU productions presented during the quarter and to write an essay reviewing the scenic elements of the design. In addition, the students will be required to present a photographic essay on the design elements of an assigned historical period.

Materials: Students will be required to furnish paper for note taking. They will also need to furnish basic drawing, model construction and drafting materials that would include sketch pads, triangles (30/60 & 45), architects scale rule, metal straight edge, eraser, eraser shield, compass, exacto knife and any other material needed to complete assignments.
Course Objectives: During this class students will be introduced to the intellectual, and creative tools with which to explore the scenic design process. A brief history of scenic design will be presented and discussed in order to provide a broader background from which to work. Students will explore the basics elements of scenic design including concept, composition, drawing, painting, modeling and drafting. Students will also research and present a pictorial essay on the design elements of an assigned historical period in class.

Attendance/Lateness Policy: Students are responsible for attending class every time that it is held. Absences will result in a loss of ten points. The only exception is mandatory university sponsored events and THEN, ONLY if I know in advance. Work due on a day that you miss will be accepted with a 10% deduction per each period it is late.
