Tech-Fee Committee Meeting

January 25, 2007

Members Present:  Anna Cavinato, Janet Hume-Schwarz, Carolyn Bloyed, Linda Fratzke, Steve Cheney, Brian Sather

Resource Members Present:  Paul Rowan, Michael Sirrine, Anna Maria Dill, Karen Clay, Helen Moore

Guests:  Les Balsiger, Peter Wordelman, Gaby Ochoa

Discussed the EOU Region Center proposal (Les Balsiger).   Questions and concerns included:

• Questions regarding setup and maintenance policies and costs associated with placing the equipment.  The suggestion was made to use new computers for proposals that include placing equipment off-campus.
• There was no software included in the proposal – should it have been?
• Should a BackUPS be included for each computer? 

Les will consult with Mike Cannon and revise the proposal to address the concerns listed above.  It was noted that Mike Cannon is currently working on MOUs with various DDE sites.  Some of the maintenance issues may be resolved through the MOUs.

Discussed the Video Teaching Classroom Loso 123 (Peter Wordelman)  Questions and concerns included:

• How secure would the equipment be? 
• How many students would be able to use it?
• Could a portable (less expensive) system serve the same purpose?

Michael Sirrine told the committee that, depending on how it was presented, this proposal could have a very good chance of receiving outside funding.

Discussed the Multicultural Student Center proposal (Gaby Ochoa).  Questions and concerns included:

• There have been numerous past problems with security in this area.  What will be done to secure the computers?  Gaby said that the OMA is paying for students to work in the center and the area is locked (metal gate pulled down) when there is no student on duty. 
• There were concerns about network access and whether or not additional wiring would be required to accommodate four computers in this area.  Paul will check on this and report back. 
• Gaby agreed that refurbished Tech Fee computers could be used rather than purchasing new ones.

Helen will include a brief budget summary with the minutes of this meeting.

There was a question regarding whether or not proposals that the committee have already recommended for funding could be sent to the Provost for approval while the committee evaluates the remaining proposals.  Linda will check with the Provost and report back at the next meeting.
