Program Philosophy

For many of our new students, university life is vastly different that anything they have experienced before. Helping to ensure that students acclimate to this new life is an important key to their retention. To that end, EOU’s Early Alert System is designed to help identify behaviors that, left unchecked, would likely lead to an unsuccessful experience in higher education. The EAS is designed to identify problems that manifest as difficulty in the academic setting. We realize that a variety of issues may underlie this manifestation, but we won’t know that until we look into the issue at hand.

Program Highlights

1. The program is limited to freshmen; sophomores, juniors and seniors who demonstrate any of the behaviors noted herein should be referred either to their academic advisor or to Student Affairs.
2. In order for any intervention to have any significant potential for success, it must be made early enough to modify the problematic behavior. Therefore, the Early Alert System can only be activated in the first five weeks of the term.
3. Once an EA is filed, the student’s academic adviser and HUM 101/2 facilitator will be notified of such action, and the reason for it.
4. The student him/herself will be immediately notified, and required to contact one of the aforementioned individuals.
5. A resolution to the situation will be sought. If such resolution requires a higher order of intervention, the student will be referred to such, usually through Student Affairs.
6. The initial referrer will be notified that resolution has either been reached, or is in progress.
