Psychology Unit 5 Section 4 Page 1/4

Social Science Exercise # 2 - The Uses of Enchantment

Bruno Bettelheim was a famous child psychologist and a follower of Freudian theory. His basic idea is that fairy tales are important for young children to work out natural feelings that they have about their life and relationships with their family members and friends. For this second exercise, based on The Uses of Enchantment, you will read Part I "A Pocketful of Magic," and just skim the first sections of Part II, "In Fairy Land".

Remember to check the Course Time Schedule

To complete the exercise you need to follow these steps:

Step One: Read the assigned sections of The Uses of Enchantment.
Step Two: Read the fairy tale, "The Haunted Forest," on page 2 of this section.
Step Three: Based on Bettelheim and the Fairy Tale, your task is to write your own fairy tale about what happens after the ending of the Haunted Forest. Your fairy tale should be between 2-3 pages. Do not exceed this length. It can be a straight narrative, or you can include dialogue. The design and storyline of the fairy tale are all your own decision.
Step Four: Complete the Form on page 3 of this section, which includes a space for submission of your fairy tale.
Step Five: Comments and your fairy tale and form answers will be given back to you and Student Work Highlights will be posted.
