The most important general text on Social Sciences is:

Elgin F. Hunt and David C. Colander, Social Science: An Introduction to the Study of Society Ninth Edition. Boston: Allyn & Bacon, 1996.
The Hunt and Colander book is a basic textbook of social science. It has excellent definitions and background on the development of the social sciences in their historical and intellectual relationships with society.
