I. The Homepage and Navigation Bars
The Homepage is the access page to the course. It has key information on the formation of the Web site and highlights the Introduction, Directory and the instructor's homepage.

Most pages include a Primary Navigation Bar. You may select different links on the Navigation bar which looks like this:

On the Navigation Bar there are ten links: Home, Tutorial, TOC, Directory, Syllabus, Schedule, Dialogues, Student Profiles, Help, and Contact Info. The Home link will always take you to the homepage of the course. The Tutorial link will take you to this page, to explain to students how to navigate around the course. The TOC is a Table of Contents that allows you quick access to all ten units. There is also a Search Engine on this page that allows you to search for a certain term that you would like to find on the Course Web. The Directory link has the entire course - all pages listed and linked. The Syllabus and Schedule links are placed in the navigation bar for your convenience so that you can always refer to these guides. The Schedule link also also serves as a checklist to make sure that you are completing all the sections of the unit. The Dialogues link will lead you directly to a Dialogue section that has four different course discussion areas for you to access. Discussions can range from reading based discussion to visuals based discussion. The Student Profiles link is to a page where some information about classmates are available. You may find it useful to know the varying majors, interests and with permissions, email of your fellow students. The Help link will take you to some tools to help you better utilize the course. It includes a link to this page, as well as other helpful areas such as a quick link to the ten units, a course time schedule, a glossary of social science terms (a short dictionary always at your disposal), further in-sites and reading that has some interesting web links and readings on the social sciences, and a discussion and interactive map that gives you both an overview and access to all the assignments. These tools can be used in conjunction with each other, as well as individually. The final link on the navigation bar is Contact Info that will show you all the ways to contact the professor or if you have information on registration for this course.

The course is divided into Units and Sections. Each Unit has between 3-5 sections. Each UNIT has an overview page that has links to the SECTIONS in that Unit. If a section has more than a couple of pages, they usually include a Secondary Navigation Bar. These navigation bars are easy ways to work through a particular section. For example the first Section of the Anthropology Unit, is entitled, "Anthropology: Scope and Schools of Thought" includes the following Web pages.

Secondary Navigation Bars have their links in red to distinguish them from the Primary Navigation Bar.
Take a moment now and practice with each link on the navigation bar. When you finish a section or unit or even a page, you may decide to go to a different part of the course, and the navigation bar will always get you there quickly. Navigation Bars (both primary and secondary) are placed at the bottom of each page. You can always click the BACK button on your browser to take you to the previously viewed page. Review the syllabus and Table of Contents after practicing using the navigation bar.
