Primary Course Themes

 

These are ten primary course themes that can be used to reflect on the integration of the issues raised in exploring six different social sciences and their relevance to our thinking about society.

1. Issues of methodology

a). Collection, classification and interpretation of data

b). Systematic and broad analysis

c). Valid hypotheses

d). Research ethics

2. The development of human identity

Does the individual identity depend upon the social process? How can the individual influence the society?

3. Linkages between technology and society. How does technology influence societal institutions (bureaucracies, the church etc.)?

4. Linkages between technology and the individual.

5. The influence and value of ideas, philosophy and religion.

6. The issue of ideology? What is ideology? Is it a philosophy or a blueprint for action?

7. Relationship between resources and society on population growth, urbanization process, development of social stratification, and economic development.

8. Does a collective past give value to our lives? Can we control our collective present? Can we shape our collective future? What is the role of social science in this process?

9. What elements make the social sciences valid areas of study?

10. What is the value of prediction?
