Commercial news and advertising

In-class assignment:

This needs to be done in groups no bigger than four. Come prepared to go through a commercial magazine (like Time, Newsweek). Do some searching on wikipedia to find out some basics about their readership (circulation) and ownership, and bring this to class. We'll have some magazines to choose from in class. You'll be looking at the advertising, answering some questions, and drawing some conclusions about the relationship between content and advertising. So it might be wise to check out a Time or Newsweek before your discussion (think Pierce Library) and just start paying more attention to the advertising.

Assignment: 150 to 200 - word abstract (an abstract is basically a summary with some analysis)

  1. At the top, put the citations for the articles you read.
  2. Briefly summarize the articles (1-2 sentences for each).
  3. Relate the articles to the class (why do you think we're reading them?)
  4. Basically, I want you to show me that: 1) you read the articles, and; 2) you got something out of them. One way to think of it might be responding to the question, 'what did he want us to get out of this?' Or 'how does it relate to the topic for the week?'
  5. Also, make sure you bring some basic information on Newsweek and/or Time (circulation, ownership)
