- What should be done?
- Hardin--address 'intolerable freedom to breed;' privatize the 'commons'--his logic is that if the commons are 'owned,' there will be more incentive to manage them for long-term societal needs (is this how private property works?)
- Alternative view--sustainable development: "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own need."
- Technology (that is sustainable, small-scale, compatible with what people already do, accepted socially)
- Political and social issues
- Education?
- Are people 'ecologically literate?'
- Consumption--are consumers aware of the consequences of their consumption?
- Industrialization?
- Internalize costs (which would increase prices of goods, and . . . voila! . . . decrease consumption of stuff (with the exception of food, hopefully)
- Individuals
- as consumers--reduce, re-use, recycle, upcycle ('cradle-to-cradle' design), buy local
- as citizens--avoid political propaganda--TV campaign ads, presidential debates sponsored by the major parties, TV network campaign coverage; learn about smart growth and how it applies to your community
- workers
- Government
- International bodies
- Industry
- The Big Picture
- Politics, media, money, consumption . . . .
- Education, democracy--what keeps people from caring??
