The problem of consumption

  • What should be done?
    • Hardin--address 'intolerable freedom to breed;' privatize the 'commons'--his logic is that if the commons are 'owned,' there will be more incentive to manage them for long-term societal needs (is this how private property works?)
    • Alternative view--sustainable development: "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own need."
      • Technology (that is sustainable, small-scale, compatible with what people already do, accepted socially)
      • Political and social issues
      • Education?
        • Are people 'ecologically literate?'
        • Consumption--are consumers aware of the consequences of their consumption?
      • Industrialization?
      • Internalize costs (which would increase prices of goods, and . . . voila! . . . decrease consumption of stuff (with the exception of food, hopefully)
    • Individuals
      • as consumers--reduce, re-use, recycle, upcycle ('cradle-to-cradle' design), buy local
      • as citizens--avoid political propaganda--TV campaign ads, presidential debates sponsored by the major parties, TV network campaign coverage; learn about smart growth and how it applies to your community
      • workers
    • Government
      • tax policy
      • regulation
    • International bodies
    • Industry
  • The Big Picture
    • Politics, media, money, consumption . . . .
    • Education, democracy--what keeps people from caring??
