So far . . . We'll be doing the homeless project presentations during week 4 (next week). However, we may push back the midterm exam until week 5. The drawback is that you'll be studying for the exam while we've already moved on to begin work on the Haven from Hunger project. Friday (Jan 27) we'll be discussion Wagner's book Checkerboard Square. For the midterm, you'll be responsible for a few things: Wagner's book (one); your homelessness projects (two: I'll be looking to see that you have something thoughtful to say about them, especially related to how social welfare systems work); the presenters we've had in class (three: they include Zee Koza, Beth Spicer, Kandi Nafziger, Verl Long, Brenda Lawson, Carmen Gentry, Cedric Shanks, Jim Brougham, and Stephanie Miller). What would I expect you do get out of these presentations? You should be thinking about comparing the different presenters and the agencies/organizations they work for. From the points of view of people in them, caseworkers and managers, the 'clients,' the community, funding sources, etc. Lecture page I'm putting some stuff up, so check it out--some has to do with the Hunger project (the community development stuff), but it may be helpful to go through it while we're working on the homelessness project, too.
