Announcements

Final period on Thursday

Don't forget--Thursday at 10 am, if you're coming. Let me know if you're bringing any food/drink. We can nuke popcorn upstairs. The movie, unless I get other suggestions, will be Princess Bride.

Carmen Gentry will be here Friday

Carmen Gentry has been working for Community Connection for seven years. She is this year's community recipient of the Women of Courage and Vision Award (Rosemary Powers and Tonia St. Germain were the recipients on campus). She works on a variety of projects--helping clients with utility bills, housing, food, etc. Under her leadership the food banks and the amount of food available to them have grown dramatically. Carmen has been very helpful to several groups this year, and we do hope that Community Connection is a partner with Haven from Hunger for the long haul. Marta Harvill, who was hired last year to coordinate food drives, will be here as well. Plan to attend.

Spring symposium announcement

Time's drawing near--the deadline for Spring Symposium proposals submitted by students and signed by a faculty or other appropriate sponsor are due in Inlow 116 by 5:00 p.m. Monday, March 15th. Please make sure to include your email address. The symposium is scheduled for May 18.

Proposal cover sheets are available on the Symposium website at:

http://www.eou.edu/sprsymp/

If you or your group is interested in presenting something from this class, I'd be happy to talk with you about it or sponsor your presentation. You've done some pretty interesting stuff this term for the hunger project, and the some of you that have worked on anthro/soc club activities might want to think about presenting some of your work as well.

The term paper

Me thinks it a good idea if you go back and read the description of the term paper. It's fairly well-structured, if you're in need of that sort of thing, and you wouldn't want to forget large chunks of it. Remember, it's not an ordinary term paper, so be attentive to the details.

Credits offered

In connection with International Women’s Week (IWW) beginning next Monday, Professor Nancy Knowles has developed a one-credit course for Gender Studies (GEND 410). This course involves attending ten hours of IWW events and writing an essay about the experience. The draft of the IWW schedule of events can be found at:
http://www2.eou.edu/~nknowles/iww04events.html. A brief syllabus for GEND 410 for IWW is located at: http://www.eou.edu/~nknowles/winter2004/gend410.html

Please contact Professor Knowles at (nknowles@eou.edu) to register. You would need then to submit an attendance form and essay by March 15.

Midterm key

I'll have the tests back on Friday in class. In the meantime, I've put up a key for the midterm.

Feb 17: Books?

Not yet. The bookstore is looking into ordering Checkerboard Square. She has 11 down as being sold--so I'm assuming either some of you got them, or 11 people with an interest in qualitative studies of homelessness rushed in there and purchased them before we had a chance. I should know more tomorrow.

Update: There will be 10 books arriving on Monday, Feb 23. More details as they emerge on this breaking story . . .

New details have emerged! I just checked out abebooks.com, and there were 11 of them there. So if you go there and order it now, you could get it pretty quickly, and for a reasonable price.

Spring symposium

I'd encourage you to consider this--whether you want to present something from the hunger project or something else. It's a good chance to get in front of a crowd in a friendly setting and present your work. And you know what they say (whoever they are) . . . looks good on the resumé!

Wednesday, Jan 28: Gov. Kulongowski in Room 210

This is from President Lund:

'I'm very pleased to announce that Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski is planning to visit EOU tomorrow, Wednesday, Jan. 28. The event, part pf a statewide tour, is open to all faculty, staff and students and is scheduled from approximately 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. The Governor has asked to visit a class and will be attending Colleen Johnson's economics course in in Zabel 142, where he will discuss Ballot Measure 30.
We will share any additional information with you as it becomes available.'

I'm willing to allow students to attend the governor's appearance--we've talked enough about Measure 30 in class. This doesn't happen every day. I'm also willing to stay back with any students who would like to talk about the book we've been reading, get a better handle on it. So we'll meet in class, but if you go to the governor's talk, I'd like to know and like a report (we'll start Thursday class talking about it).

Wednesday, Jan 21: Dr. Powers will be in class

I'd like you working toward the hunger project ideas and activities you want to do. Dr. Powers is also working on the hunger project, and will be in class to answer questions and visit groups. And she will have ideas and a fresh perspective. Plan to attend.

Week 4 on Tuesday (Jan 27): Speaker in class

Donna Beegle will be in class next Tuesday. She runs a company called 'Communication Across Barriers.' One of the key goals of her activities is to break down barriers and erase the stigma attached to poverty. You should all look over her website, and think about what kind of advice she might have about the hunger project and your assignments (which you should pretty much have nailed down by that time, right??). We can open it up to broader discussions as well about the class subject matter.

So come prepared to participate in class discussion. We just got lucky here--she's in town and happens to be visiting a sibling (who is an EOU student).

Week 3: I'll be gone the rest of the week (Wed-Fri)

But . . . I'd like you to meet, and by the end of the week know what you'd like to work on for the hunger project. The ideas that were presented in class can be found here. Have someone from your group send me an email with your ideas. In the meantime, there should be plenty of lecture material to keep you busy.

Jan 16: Haven from Hunger

We'll again be discussing the hunger project on Friday. Hopefully we're narrowing down, getting more specific and people are thinking about how they might like to contribute so we can move toward planning the use of time during weeks 7 and 8 of the term. Questions?

Jan 9: Bookstore is waiting for re-orders

Portland Airport's been closed, sections of I-84 have been closed, and re-orders haven't arrived. If you have a problem, call the bookstore and they may be able to arrange photocopying of reading assignments from texts to tide you over until they do arrive.

Jan 6: Getting there

I'm working on updating the web page. You can rely on the first few weeks of the readings page. Let me know if you have any questions about stuff on the web page.
