Free Press, Censorship

What is a ‘free press?’

Components of a free press:

  • Diversity of opinion/viewpoints (local/regional/national; business vs labor;
  • Diversified ownership (among private, public, independent, non-profit, etc.)
  • Transparency (including disclosure)
  • Freedom to pursue any story (constraints may be political, financial, etc.)
  • Accountability?

How free is the U.S. Press?

What is 'censorship?'

  • Control of information
  • By whom?
  • How?
  • Self-censorship
  • Justifications used for censorship (e.g., WikiLeaks)
  • Government, other external forces
  • 'Passive' censorship--what is that??
