EOU REDUCES HOUSING COSTS FOR ON-CAMPUS STUDENTS
LA GRANDE, Ore. (EOU)

When students and families scope out the best colleges and universities, cost is one of the top factors influencing their decision – especially today. In response, Eastern Oregon University has announced it will decrease the cost of on-campus housing.

“We know families are very concerned about the cost of college,” said Dixie Lund, EOU president. “It is EOU’s mission to provide accessible and affordable education to students and I’m very pleased we have been able to make this reduction possible.”

Effective fall term 2009, the 12 percent reduction will bring the cost of room and board for North and Daugherty halls to $7,870 for the academic year. This includes the basic mandatory meal plan. Students living in Alikut Hall will pay $4,335 for the year. Meal plans in Alikut are optional.

“During these difficult financial times, when the cost of going to college is at the forefront of students’ and families’ minds, we have worked hard to make these new rates available,” said Camille Consolvo, dean of Students Affairs at EOU.

For students in EOU’s North and Daugherty Residence Halls, that savings equals $1,100 per academic year. Savings for returning and transfer students living in Alikut Residence Hall are also available and can reach over $1,300 per year.

“These room rates make us extremely competitive and among the lowest cost in the state,” said Stephen Jenkins, director of Housing and Student Life at EOU. “The type of housing we offer would cost significantly more at other schools, so parents are definitely getting more for their money.”

North and Daugherty halls offer suite-style housing for freshmen and sophomores. Opened in 2005, the newest residence halls feature cable TV, high-speed internet access, kitchenettes with microwaves and full-size refrigerators/freezers. Study areas and game rooms for students round out the new buildings. Alikut Hall features apartment-style housing primarily for returning and
transfer students, student over age 21 and international students. All Alikut suites have two bathrooms, living area, and a kitchenette with a stovetop and oven.

“The new room rates, coupled with our no out-of-state tuition means EOU offers an incredibly high-quality on-campus education at very competitive rates, in an outdoor environment that cannot be beat,” said Tim Seydel, associate vice president for marketing, development and public affairs. “High-quality programs and affordable costs in a safe and beautiful setting is something students and families are looking for, and we have it all.”
