Instruction is the most valuable function at Eastern Oregon University. To assure that all students gain full benefit of instruction, the University insists that appropriate classroom decorum be maintained. Minimum elements of appropriate classroom decorum include: punctuality, courtesy, civility, purposefulness, and integrity.
To achieve these elements, faculty may establish rules about such matters as: tardiness, absences, argumentation, collaboration, presence of children and guests, eating and drinking and basic forms of conduct to minimize disruption of the educational process. Such rules established by individual faculty will be clearly and explicitly communicated to students in the course using such means as the course syllabus.
Persons judged by a faculty member to be disruptive may be referred by the faculty member for University disciplinary review and action. Further, a faculty member has the responsibility and right to excuse disruptive persons from a class session.
Classroom decorum also extends to the virtual classroom. Faculty may establish and publish in syllabi rules and policies governing appropriate decorum and use for discussion groups that are included as part of online courses. In the absence of such rules, the University has the expectation that students will engage in civil discourse. Students are not to share the written work of other students outside of the discussion group without the knowledge and approval of the person being quoted and the faculty member teaching the course.Violations of protocols may subject the offending student to being barred/removed from a discussion group, or possible action under the Academic Honesty Code, or the Student Code of Conduct of the University.
Students with concerns about a faculty member's actions are encouraged to contact the dean of the school in which the faculty member is located.
