801s

1.     A student cut his finger while scraping paint with a razor blade

2.     An employee hurt his back while moving tables in the quad.

3.       Student was sweeping and debris particles became trapped between his eye and contact lenses, scratching the eye.

Non–801s - None

Safety Grams – No new safety grams received.  However, Rob received notice of a concern regarding the air quality in Zabel Hall.  Rob investigated and found that the main air intake for the building is located near an area where people often go to smoke.  The area is also grassy and is mowed regularly.  The cigarette smoke and fumes from the mowers are pulled directly into the building via the air intakes.  Rob is looking into having the ashtrays moved to alternate locations and is researching other landscape options to eliminate the need for mowing.  As a short-term solution, he has asked the grounds crew to rearrange their schedules and mow when there is less air intake.

Badgley Hall was recently inspected by the DHS Radiation Protection Services Division to insure that Radiation Guidelines have been followed with special attention being paid to record keeping and signage.  On a scale of 1-5 EOU scored a 5.  Way to go Sue!!

The Aramark area in Hoke was recently inspected by OHSA personnel and also passed with flying colors.  The only infraction was an extra CO2 tank that was not properly secured.  The correction was made immediately.

Rob completed the annual EOU Risk Management report for DAS. Procedures are in place that should make it simpler in the future.

Kerry Lowen, the new photography instructor, is redesigning the Loso Hall dark room.  During the process, some safety hazards were identified including inadequate ventilation and some chemical storage issues.  Steps are being taken to rectify these concerns.  Another concern was a build up of residue from the silver fixer used in film developing.  Bill Benson is taking steps to increase how often the floor is mopped to help reduce the buildup.

The Fire Marshal met with key campus personnel on September 12 to evaluate emergency response issues for Pierce Library.  There was some concern over possible disruption of campus communications in the event of a flood in the library basement since the telephone switch and a main network hub are both housed there.  It was noted, however, that there are sump pumps present and they are tested on a regular basis.  Other items that were discussed include the fact that alarm system does not connect to local agencies.  However, in the event of an emergency all library staff members are trained to call 911 immediately. There are hose connections in place in the library that could be used by the Fire Department if needed.   Additional fire suppression issues were discussed.

Rob and Tracy reviewed the Hazardous Communication video for new employees (it was not the same video that the committee watched earlier this year) and agreed that, although it is a bit dated, the information is appropriate.

Building Inspections – No Reports Available for August at this time.

Pending Safety Grams – Volleyball court – Rob investigated the situation and suggested that campus look into removing the concrete border entirely and replacing it with a raised grass border.  Rob will check with Mike Rhodes regarding feasibility of this idea.  Helen will contact Student Activities to find out what level of funding might be available from student fees such as Incidental Fees and/or Vending Fees.

At the last meeting, Jeff Dunbar suggested that student funding might be available to fund the purchase of an AED (automated external defibulator).  Helen will check with Jeff regarding the status of the request.

Steve Wadner informed the committee of a request from students to organize a “Trap Shooting” club.  While reviewing the request to insure that it complied with our Campus Weapons Policy, some contradictions were noted in the policy.  For instance, one section of the policy states that there are no weapons allowed on campus, while another refers to the rules that must be followed if a hunting rifle is left in a vehicle on campus.  Also, the length of a knife blade prohibited on campus is not consistent throughout the document. Because the cabinet has already approved the policy, Tracy will check with Irene regarding the correct procedure for correcting the inconsistencies.

The committee will wait until October’s meeting to schedule a date for the annual Let There Be Light tour.

Next meeting scheduled for 1:00pm on October 10th in Ackerman Alumni Room.

Minutes submitted by Helen Moore.
