NEW BUSINESS
Minutes from last meeting approved as submitted.
New student member, Tarna Armstrong, was introduced and Irene shared a bit about the duties of the Safety Committee.
New 801s (Workman Comp report)
-Employee fell in basement area at the west end of Inlow Hall. This accident
was reported as a non-801 last month, but since then employee has seen a
doctor. There is still no time lost, other than the doctor's appointments.
-Employee got dust in his eye. No time lost. Employee has been instructed
to always wear safety glasses.
Non-801s
-None
New Safety Grams
There are slippery floors and unattached benches in the women's locker room.
Safety strips are also worn away. A woman was observed slipping and nearly
falling on 5/15/03. Many present commented this had also happened to them
in the past. -- John said that the athletic director is aware of the problems
and is taking steps to correct them, including spraying a non-skid surface
onto the floor. Ryan will follow-up and make sure that the benches are attached
to the floor as well.
-Student activities continue to cover outside lights with plastic bags in
order to kill light so that movies can be shown at night. Two hazards; outside
night light that is intended to provide for safety on campus at night is
being blocked and students are using ladders that are too short to reach
the lights that are 15 feet tall. One student was seen standing on an 8-foot
ladder in the bed of a pickup. -- Irene will talk with Robin Weinman regarding
solutions to these hazards.
-There is a grease accumulation on the Hoke loading dock from the grease
barrels that Chartwells uses. A permanent solution needs to be found to
the problem. -- Linda reported that she and Don Calder have been working
with Chartwells and hope to have found the permanent solutions. The grease
cans have been confined, permanent funnels are in place and Chartwell employees
have been instructed in their use.
-John mentioned a problem with the basketball hoop falling into the swimming
pool. He suggested putting a hook on the back of the hoop and attaching
it to the wall via a rope. John will submit a Safety Gram.
Helen will check with Gary Moses about getting a printout of the Safety Gram webpage with space for follow-up comments.
The library is planning a full-fledged fire drill this summer. Ken Watson is coordinating the details with Irene.
Tim Jarvis, a toxicology consultant working on the new science building, did a walk through of Loso Hall and found very few problems. He said the building, as a whole, was in good shape. He will send a written report to Bob.
OLD BUSINESS
OLD SAFETY GRAMS
-Ryan Platt reported on some additional options he found for improving the
safety of the cement border surrounding the new sand volleyball court. Prices
ranged from $100.00 for a mediocre fix to $750.00 for a good fix. Committee
agreed that $750.00 was not and unreasonable cost to make the area safer.
-Helen reported that a physical plant worker said the ramp in the basement
of Inlow Hall was not broken, so he wasn't sure what we wanted him to do.
Irene will pursue issue with Mike Rhodes.
Darlene Capshaw attended the Union County Planning Meeting in Irene's stead (Irene was on vacation). It was held in the basement of the county dispatch center and was attended by several key county people (medical examiner, county commissioners, etc) who staged some mock emergencies. Darlene said the meeting was very informative and additional meetings will be scheduled in the future.
-A few violations were found during the building inspection of Inlow Hall, which (due to a scheduling conflict) was conducted on May 16 instead of May 15. Violations included the use of extension cords and a coffee pot without an auto shutoff. Irene will send notices to those offices with the violations.
Next meeting is scheduled for July 15, 2003 at 2:00pm.
