NEW BUSINESS
Minutes from last meeting approved as submitted.
Irene introduced a new committee member to represent Athletics, Ryan Platt. Ryan will be serving on the committee in place of Rob Cashell.
Irene announced that Shirley Roberts is the alternate building manager for Pierce Library and Tracy Trimble is the alternate building manager for Loso Hall.
New 801s (Workman Comp report)
-None.
Non-801s
-Employee fell on steps during a tour of the new science center. No time
loss.
During a performance by the Grande Ronde Symphony, a trumpet player's chair leg slipped off the riser. The trumpet player fell on his knee (he had recently had surgery on the knee). He went to the VA hospital and the knee was injured (a crack on the kneecap) but the doctor was unable to determine whether the damage to his knee was caused by the fall or the recent surgery. The player's trumpet was also damaged in the fall. The trumpet player filed a claim with EOU's Risk Management. The claim is under investigation.
Irene has been in contact with a retired Oregon OSHA Inspector and he has provided Irene with valuable information regarding OSHA. It may be possible to get some OSHA consultation to help address safety problem areas around campus. The inspector also said that training of safety committee members is required by law. There are free training sessions offered by OSHA in Hermiston on April 16th and 17th with four separate sessions being offered, one each morning and one each afternoon. Safety Committee funds can be used to pay for travel to the training. Members are encouraged to attend at least one session and then report back to the committee.
Committee expressed its appreciation to Mike Daugherty and Linda Overlock for cleaning up the grease spill outside of Hoke. If left unattended the spill would have created a significant safety hazard.
New Safety Grams
-None
OLD BUSINESS
Old Safety Grams
-Gravel (fee) parking lot issue. Mike Rhodes has been in contact with the
city and the University has received permission to mark five feet on each
side of the entrance as "No Parking". Facilities personnel will
do the painting over spring break.
-Mike Rhodes was informed that "L" Street sidewalk below the grand
staircase is the University's responsibility. The estimate to repair the
sidewalk is $16,000. The administration is currently researching funding
possibilities.
-A safe place to park the food service golf cart has not been found. Bob
Gilmore is still trying to find a solution to the issue. The old restroom/concession
area at the stadium may be a possibility. Bob will check into it.
The building inspection of Loso Hall was postponed due to the numerous end
of the term activities. The inspection will be rescheduled next term.
Next meeting is scheduled for April 22, 2003 at 2:00pm.
