Safety Grams

– One report of lighting issues around Hoke.  A sidewalk light on the west side of building is not functioning.  The outside stairs to the second floor on the east side of the building are very poorly lit.  Several options were discussed, including adding a bright light on the 2nd floor deck facing the dark stairs.  Rob will submit a Facilities service request to have the issues corrected.

-There was another report submitted to Rob (not in the form of a safety gram).  Air intakes in Zabel Hall and Badgley Hall were pulling in exhaust fumes from leaf blowers. Plant folks were made aware and they planned to clean up leaves when there were the fewest occupants in the buildings.

The Let There be Light tour was successful.  The results were forwarded to Marv Wigle for action and posted on infoline.  Helen received a note from a homeowner whose property borders the eastside of the lower Hunt parking lot.  She was concerned that additional lighting might not adhere to La Grande’s dark sky guidelines. Marv Wigle responded assuring the homeowner that any efforts to enhance campus lighting would adhere to the dark sky guidelines.

Pandemic overview - Rob presented the plan to the cabinet and forwarded an overview to President Fatemi.  President Fatemi was pleased with the plan.  Rob distributed copies of the overview to committee members.  We are currently at level 0 blue.   The committee discussed plan objectives and action groups.  Rob indicated that the Student Affairs has shown a lot of interest in the plan.  Concerns in case of a pandemic include when to close campus, what would be the trigger for a closure, and how foreign students would be dealt with.  Rob assured the committee that Eastern has a good infrastructure in place.

Volleyball court issue is still in progress.  Stanna will check with Brian regarding the status.

Tony Calhoun is back to work on limited duty.  So far there has been no investigation by OSHA, but there will probably be one when they come to campus for a general campus check.

Student Affairs asked why some buildings have more fire drills than others.  There is also concern regarding to insure total evacuation when a drill happens.  Discussion items included, can the safety committee do something to help?  Should we have evacuation drills?  Should we have earthquake drills?  It was agreed that a sub-committee would be formed to plan an earthquake drill for campus. Projected time for drill is Spring Term 2007.  Sue, Helen, Tracy, Stanna, and  Rob will serve on the sub-committee.  The sub-committee will gather plans from the past drills for examples.  Rob will talk with local entities including the Fire Department, Dara Decker (Union County Emergency Services Officer) and the Grande Ronde Hospital.

Bob brought up need for visual notification during fire alarms such as strobe lights.  During a recent drill one student did not leave the building because he was wearing headphones and did not hear the alarm.

Meeting adjourned at 2:05.

Next meeting is scheduled for December 11, 2006 at 1:00pm
