The meeting was called to order at 1:00 p.m. 

 

Minutes of September’s meeting were approved as submitted.

 

801 Reports for September:

• Employee backed into the wall at Ackerman while using a floor cleaning machine hitting elbow on the wall. No time loss.
• Student employee was cleaning the scrub room in Hunt; gathered items to leave and hit elbow on metal door when leaving the room. No time loss.
• Employee twisted ankle in Schwarz Theatre while moving a set. No time loss.
• Employee slipped on the floor while carrying a 5 gallon bucket of floor cleaner in the South Residence Hall Lobby. The employee had substance in one eye and a strained back. No time loss.
• Employee experienced pain in back which radiated down left hip to the ankle while operating floor cleaner in Zabel. Time loss (employee is currently on modified duty).
• Employee strained left rotor cuff while carrying boxes of paper up the Hunt stair well. No time loss yet. Employee's Doctor wants to see if the shoulder will heal on its own.

 

Non 801's for September:

• Employee experienced sharp pain in lower back after picking up bucket off of the floor in the North Cubicles.

 

801 Reports for October:

• Employee fell from scaffolding breaking L-2 vertebra in back. Employee is currently seeking follow up care to determine if there is any further injury. Time loss.

There was extended discussion regarding the recent increase in employee on-the-job injuries.  Several possible reasons for the increase were discussed.  The consensus of the committee was that ever increasing work loads for virtually all campus employees is directly related to the increase in on-the-job injuries at EOU.  As employees have more work to accomplish in a limited amount of time, safety is often one of the first things to be sacrificed.   It was acknowledged that there are several reasons for the increased work loads including the current hiring freeze and employees having to cover for other employees who are out on vacation or sick-leave.

• We are still waiting on information from Brian Avila regarding the volleyball court.

 

Rob reported that bleachers in Quinn main basketball gym are scheduled to be replaced with new “up-to-code” bleachers.

  

Rob reported that Colleen Cascio of the student affairs Office requested that we revisit the Crisis Management Plan.  Examples of situations covered by crisis management plan include pandemic, campus closures, suicide, etc.  We will pursue this issue in more detail at the next meeting.  Note:  OHSU has offered to help in case of a pandemic situation. 

 

The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, November 13 at 1:00, in the Alumni Room.
