NEW BUSINESS
Minutes from last meeting approved as submitted.
New 801s (Workman Comp report)
-Carpel Tunnel, no action at this time
Non-801s
-OHSU student fell on the grand staircase. Went to student health, stitches
were required.
New Safety Grams
-OHSU student fell on the grand staircase. Safety Gram sent for informational
purposes. The grand staircase was barricaded until a permanent solution
can be found.
-Safety Hazard when trying to exit the stadium (free) parking lot. Vehicles
are parked so close to the exits that oncoming traffic can't be seen. Irene
will forward the issue to Mike Rhodes.
Scott mentioned that there is a problem with vehicles ignoring the traffic signs and going the wrong way on the one-way streets, "I" and "J". There was discussion regarding whether or not the city police could and/or would issue citations. Scott will submit a Safety Gram on the matter.
Irene mentioned that there were several negative comments regarding the closure of the grand staircase, but that it will remain closed for the time being.
There have been some recent situations where people have been ignoring the safety notices posted by campus maintenance workers while they are working on projects. An example given was: a student walked through the safety tape that surrounded the sidewalk on the east side of 8th Street hill during the handrail construction. Irene will send a note to eastalk, infoline and the student listserv asking the campus community to be respectful of campus maintenance workers, especially when safety notices are posted.
The OHSU student who was hurt on the grand staircase asked Helen if it would be possible for a senior nursing student to serve on the Safety Committee. An emphasis in the senior year nursing curriculum is on community health and she thought an OHSU student representative would be able to contribute to the committee while gaining experience working with the campus community at the same time. Helen will talk with the campus OHSU Administration regarding this matter.
Sue Cain stated that she has not been getting copies of the security office incident reports on a regular basis. Scott will work with his supervisors to devise a plan to ensure that the reports will be sent to Sue on a regular basis.
Irene shared a report that showed the state vehicle accident rate for EOU was significantly higher per mile traveled when compared with other institutions around the state. Irene will look into possible reasons for the higher number of accidents.
National Seminars Group is presenting a 2-day workshop "The Essentials of OSHA Compliance 2003", on April 16 & 17, 2003 in Pasco, Washington. The committee agreed that it would be beneficial for as many committee members as possible to attend the workshop. Irene suggested that the Safety Committee budget might be able to cover the travel expenses if individual departments could pay each participant's registration fee. Vickie indicated that she would like to have Bob Gilmore attend. Sue and Helen will also attempt to find funding for the registration fee.
OLD BUSINESS
Irene brought several first aid kits to distribute to various departments who had requested them. She was unable to locate an official list of what should go into a first aid kit, but she will create a list from the items in the new first aid kits.
Steve Wadner, Beth Eaton (from Computing & Telecommunications) and
a representative from Cell One will meet this week to work on a solution
to the Security cell phone issue.
Next meeting is scheduled for February 18, 2003 at 2:00pm.
