No minutes from March – meeting was a training program with Captain Corky Gillis, EMS La Grande Police and Fire

NEW BUSINESS

New 801s – Worker's Comp Claims

•  Aerator rolled over foot – no time loss, the aerator spikes went between the employee's toes (lucky guy!)

•  Back Strain – employee loading EOU equipment at Grande Ronde Fitness Center

Non 801 reports:

•  Employee pushed down on some trash in a bin and cut a finger

The eyewash fountain for the Quinn pool area has not been installed yet (per the OSHA consultant's report) because there is some question whether the pool is going to remain open.   Mike Rhodes did not want the expense of the eyewash if the pool was going to close.

Bob Gilmore reported that the majority of the deficiencies noted by the OSHA consultant in Loso have been corrected – primarily those in the sculpture area.   Housekeeping, especially revolving around the theatre and theatre productions, remains an uphill battle.   The students in theatre persist in using the Genie lift with the outriggers removed, a safety concern for Bob and the University.   Bob will provide the students with training.   The theatre department has received funding to re-do the lighting and repair the worn out wiring in the theatre.

Bob Gilmore reported that DEQ through the SBDC put on a hazardous waste materials workshop for the Art Department, which was very worthwhile.   The workshop helped individuals to identify and recognize hazardous wastes, MSDS sheets, etc.   The Art Department is looking at providing this training on a regular basis.   Jeff MacDonald reported that there are two new volumes in the library on art hazards.

A concern was expressed that the Athletics department continues to miss safety meetings.   A suggestion was made that perhaps Sammie Moseley would be interested in serving on the safety committee.   Irene will follow up.

Irene asked the committee to consider revising the EOU Safety Plan to reflect defined terms for members.   There was a general consensus that this would be a good idea and the suggestion was made to have members serve 3 year terms on a staggered basis to retain continuity on the committee.   This will be finalized at the May meeting.

Irene let the committee know that she was resigning as chair and that May would be her last month as chair. An election will be held to for a new Safety Committee Chair at the May meeting.

Two old Safety Grams remain unresolved:   the padding around the outdoor volleyball court and the slipping hazard on the aluminum steps at the Community Stadium.

The May Safety Meeting was scheduled for May 19 at 2:00 PM.
