OFF-TO-COLLEGE CHECKLIST

This list contains optional, suggested items only – Print this checklist to make sure you have everything you need for the first year at college. Each person’s needs are different, so tailor this checklist to suit your requirements. Please refer to the 2010-2011 Room and Dining Contract for additional information.

Kitchen Needs

  • Plastic bowl and cup

Room Needs/Storage

  • Alarm clock/clock radio
  • Waste-paper basket
  • Milk crates or other sturdy storage cubes (a collapsible crate also comes in handy for carrying laundry or other things)

  • Under-the-bed storage trays
  • Lots of hangers
  • Fan
  • Drying rack
  • Adhesive hooks, tacky adhesive, and mounting tape
  • Bulletin board and push pins
  • Dry erase wall calendar/board

  • Phone cord/Ethernet cord for computer

  • Surge protector
  • Phone (check with roommate(s) to avoid duplication. Should be cordless, with multiple message boxes in the answering machine unless you’re using voice mail)
  • Portable CD, MP3, or cassette player (great to use at the gym)

Linens/Laundry Supplies

  • Sheets and pillowcases (2 sets-twin beds are extra long)
  • Towels

  • Mattress pad (all beds are twin extra long)

  • Comforter and duvet cover (makes laundering easier)
  • Clothes hangers (wire takes up less space, plastic are easier on your clothes)

Prohibited Items

  • Candles of any type (with or without a wick).
  • Fuel-powered motor vehicles or associated parts for use, maintenance, repair or storage.
  • Full-size refrigerators other than those provided by Residence Life.
  • Appliances with open heat sources (toaster ovens and bread toasters for example) and/or no thermostat control (hot plates and grills for example) (not applicable to Alikut Hall residents).
  • Space heaters, excepting those provided by EOU and/or Residence Life.
  • Burning of incense, sage or any object.
  • Smoking of any type within the buildings.
  • Evidence of candles, burning of incense, sage or any object.
  • Drapes hanging over interior entries that block natural exit pathway.
  • George Foreman or other electric grills (not applicable to Alikut Hall residents).
  • Hanging of any items over or covering the smoke detector.
  • Flammable materials on the ceiling or covering ceiling lights and/or hanging anything from the ceiling.
  • Excessive amounts of combustible materials on exterior room doors (i.e. posters, pictures, etc.)
  • Multi-plug adaptors.
  • Halogen lamps.
  • Extension cords.
