General Education Susbtitution

General Education (Gen. Ed) Substitution Form (Click Here)

In many cases a transfer course may not be an appropriate substitution for an EOU program required course, but may still be able to count toward the graduation requirement for general education credits. This form should be used when requesting a transfer course be awarded one of the general education designations – AEH (Aesthetics and Humanities), SSC (Social Sciences), SMI (Natural, Mathematical, and Informational Sciences), APC (Artistic Process and Creation), or GTW (Gateway).

Registrar’s Method of Processing Request: The Registrar’s Office may use two possible methods of processing this request. Which method is used will depend upon the subject prefix of the transfer course.

  • Method 1: If the transfer course carries a subject prefix matching an academic program at EOU, then the request will be sent to the discipline chair of that program. Example – If the transfer course carries a subject prefix of HIST (History), then the request for Gen. Ed credit will be reviewed by the discipline chair of the history program at EOU.
  • Method 2: If the transfer course carries a subject prefix not matching an academic program at EOU, then the request will be sent to the discipline chair of a program that commonly offers courses assigned the desired Gen. Ed designation.   Example – If the request is for SSC credit, and the transfer course carries a prefix of LS (Liberal Studies), then the request will likely be reviewed by the history program discipline chair.
