Friends and Colleagues,

EOU is back and moving forward!  We just released our enrollment figures for the 2009-10 academic year-the "Fourth Week" enrollment data. 

Our numbers are extremely impressive!  They are outstanding in their own right as well as compared to our system figures and even national trends.

Here are some of the highlights:

• Total headcount = 3,957 — up  7.9%
• Total credit hours = 38,997 — up  11%
• Retention = 72.1% — up from 52%
• On-campus headcount = 1,806 — up 13.6%
• Residence hall students = 378 — nearly doubled from last year
• Full-time equivalent = 2,647 — up 10.8%
• New freshmen = 473 — up 34.8%

All of these figures are well above the national averages and surpass the average of the Oregon University System.  In particular, EOU is the fastest growing university with our percentage increases in new freshman as well as our percentage growth in full-time equivalent. 

It was important for EOU to come out this strong to demonstrate our viability as a university.  These figures represent the commitment and determination of our entire university in providing quality education that is both accessible and affordable.  In addition, the Union County community was instrumental in assisting us in achieving these numbers and they will continue to be supportive in our efforts to retain these students as well as recruit new students.  There are a lot of people who worked extremely hard to achieve these numbers and we must thank them for their efforts.

It is important for us to celebrate this accomplishment, however, we cannot rest on our laurels.  We have the momentum and we must build on it.  We need to think about how we as a university can move from 3,957 students to a goal of 5,000.  We need to make this a reality as it will be the critical factor as we continue to see the state support for public universities diminish.  We must use enrollment as our key in controlling our destiny.  Next year, we need to attract 525-550 new freshmen; we must retain three out of every four freshman; we need to expand programs and find new niche markets to serve; and, we must do this without losing our core value of providing personalized high quality education at an affordable price. 

We have created the momentum of success-let us continue to build on this and forge our own path.
