Program Information
PRE-DENTAL HYGIENE
EOU and ODS College of Dental Sciences (ODS), in partnership with Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT), enables students to obtain an Associate of Applied Science degree in Dental Hygiene in La Grande.
Students complete a prerequisite coursework as outlined by the ODS and OIT, who awards the Associate of Applied Science Degree. While in progress of completing the prerequisite coursework, students make application to the ODS dental hygiene program. An opportunity to complete a Baccalaureate of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene is available via OIT’s distance education department. Dental hygiene prerequisite courses may be taken from EOU in either on-campus or on-line.
Dental hygiene prerequisites can be completed over a one-year time frame, although most students elect so spread the coursework over a two-year time frame in order maintain a competitive grade point average. Admission to the ODS School of Dental Hygiene is highly competitive, requiring high academic achievement.
The dental hygiene program requires completion of prerequisites that include one-year sequences of human anatomy and physiology, and introductory chemistry, with labs. In addition courses such as microbiology with lab, nutrition, college mathematics, general sociology, public speaking, English composition, introduction to dental hygiene and medical terminology are required.
Students are strongly encouraged to work closely with their pre-dental hygiene adviser when
developing a yearly coursework outline and in choosing appropriate coursework.
