*Hiking Trails in the Eagle Cap Wilderness

A slide show from Mike and Sue Daugherty covering some common and uncommon trails in the Eagle Cap Wilderness. The event will be on November 17 in the Outdoor Program lounge in Hoke 102 at 4:30pm.
Winter Term
*Avalanche Search And Rescue
Hoke 102 (ODP) Jan 15 @ 2pm
This clinic will introduce participants to basic avalanche rescue equipment and its use. Participants will learn how to use avalanche beacons, probes, and shovels. ODP staff encourages participants to review the avalanche awareness videos available at the ODP resource room as a companion to the clinic.
*Cross-country Skiing for Beginners
Hoke 102 (ODP) Jan 28 @ 2, field trip on Jan 30
The pre-trip part of the clinic will cover basic clothing, equipment, and winter travel safety. The field trip will include basic instruction in cross-country skiing technique and will include a ski tour.
*Snowshoeing for Beginners
Hoke 102 (ODP) Feb 18 @ 3, field trip on Feb 20
This clinic will have an hour preview Thursday, February 18th and a trip Saturday, February 20th. The pre-trip clinic will explain how to use snowshoes, how to dress in the snow, what to bring (10 essentials), and where to go. The trip, lead by the Outdoor Program, will consist of a one to three mile walk according to skill and fitness level of the participants. Snowshoes will be provided by the ODP and student will have to wear their own boots.
*Beginning Ice Climbing
Hoke 102 (ODP) Feb 25 @ 5, field trip on Feb 27
The pre-trip session on the 25th will include basic instruction in ice climbing equipment, safety and technique. Participants are encouraged to view the basic ice climbing video at the ODP as a companion piece to the clinic. It is recommended that participants be familiar with basic climbing skills like how to use a harness, tie-in knots, and belaying (can be learned at the climbing wall in Quinn) prior to the clinic. It is also recommended that participants have some back-country skiing or snowshoeing skills and know about winter cold weather clothing and how to prevent cold weather injuries (frost-bite, hypothermia, etc.). The field trip will require a 4 mile snowshoe or ski trip into the backcountry and will include top roped technical ice climbing.
