AHEC/OHSU
Physician Assistant Mentorship Program
Are you seriously
pursuing a career as a physician assistant (PA)?
Do you consider northeast Oregon your home?
Do you plan to practice your professional in rural
northeast Oregon?
This program may be for you: The AHEC/OHSU Physician
Assistant Mentorship Program!
The Oregon AHEC program and Oregon Health Sciences
University (OHSU) have the common goal of wanting
physician assistants prepared to delivery primary care
services to rural and urban medically underserved
populations. Northeast Oregon AHEC (NEOAHEC) has long
stood by its belief in "growing our own" health
professionals. Therefore, we have formed a partnership
with the OHSU PA program to:
- identify,
foster and recruit potential applicants to the
OHSU PA program.
Northeast Oregon
AHEC will identify residents of the region who: a)
presently meet the academic and health care experience
requirements of the program and demonstrate motivation
toward a career as a PA, OR b) show outstanding potential
and motivation as a future candidate for the program (by
already having completed part of the academic
requirements for the program).
Once potential applicants to the PA program are
identified, Northeast Oregon AHEC will match those
potential applicants with a PA in the region. The
practicing PA will then act as a mentor to the potential
applicant. The OHSU PA program will additionally match
the potential applicants with a faculty advisor contact
and student mentor to provide individual counseling for
preparation in applying to the program or preparation in
entering the program.
The mentoring program is designed to help strengthen PA
student applicants by making sure they take the correct
course work and meet the other program entry
requirements. Each year, Northeast Oregon AHEC will
recommend two regional students from the mentoring group
for acceptance into the OHSU PA program.
VERY FEW APPLICANTS WILL BE ACCEPTED INTO THE MENTORING
PROGRAM EACH YEAR - applicants need to show they have
seriously began the process of pursuing acceptance into
the PA program! There are only four faculty at OHSU and
very few practicing PAs in the region - the small number
of contacts therefore necessitates a small number of
applicants for mentoring.
If you are interested in being considered for the PA
mentoring program, please return the request for information form. We
will send you a packet of information describing the
program and an application form.
