student at Dr. Holland's
JOHN DAY -- Laura Pompel is the latest Oregon Health
Sciences University medical student on rotation in John
Day. She will be spending six weeks with Dr. Holland, MD
When asked what she would like to get out of her
rotation, Laura says, " I would like to become
familiar with advantages and disadvantages of a rural
practice and have an OB experience managing a
delivery".
Laura currently lives in Portland. She received her B.A.
from Smith College in Massachusetts. Outside of medicine,
Laura enjoys music, outdoor activities, world religions,
social justice issues. Laura is excited to be visiting
John Day because her mother grew up in the area and her
great-grandfather was a Grant county judge.
Laura will be at Dr. Holland's office from January 4
through February 12 so if you happen by, be sure to say
hi and make Laura feel welcome during her stay in Grant
County.
RE: MEDICAL STUDENT AT DR. HOFMANN'S
BAKER CITY -- Brian Kearns is the latest Oregon Health
Sciences University medical student on rotation spending
six weeks with Dr. Charles Hofmann in Baker City.
When asked what he would like to experience during his
rotation, Brian said, " I would like the opportunity
to do more procedures and, experience an outpatient
clinic setting.
Brain currently lives in Portland. Outside of medicine,
Brian enjoys skiing, running, reading, hiking, mounting
biking and computers.
Brain will be at Dr. Hofmann's office from February 15
through March 26 so if you happen by, be sure to say hi
and make Brian feel welcome during his stay in Baker
County.
RE: MEDICAL STUDENT AT DR. JACKSON'S OFFICE
JOHN DAY -- Leif Thompson is the latest Oregon Health
Sciences University medical student on rotation spending
six weeks with Dr. Jackson in John Day.
When asked what he would like to experience during his
rotation, Leif said, "I would like to get the feel
of rural practice, the opportunity to do more procedures
and have more responsibility for patient care, and he
would also like to have fun in the community and get to
know people". He anticipates returning to Alaska to
practice in a rural area.
Leif who currently lives in Portland, received a B.A. at
University of Alaska - Fairbanks in Music and a Master of
Arts in music at the University of California, San Diego.
Outside of medicine, Leif enjoys cross-country skiing,
music, hiking, camping, and rafting.
Leif will be at Dr. Jackson's office from February 15
through March 26 so if you happen by, be sure to say hi
and make Leif feel welcome during his stay in Grant
County.
RE: MEDICAL STUDENT AT DR. DAVID BRAUER'S
ONTARIO -- Amy Grimsrud is the latest Oregon Health
Sciences University medical student on rotation spending
six weeks with Dr. David Brauer in Ontario.
When asked what she would like to experience during her
rotation, Amy said, "I would like an understanding
of the full scope of a family practice in a small
community and be involved in women's health care
especially deliveries". I would ultimately like to
practice in a rural area.
Amy currently lives in Portland. She received her B.A.
majoring in chemistry and minoring in economics from
Montana State University. Outside of medicine, Amy enjoys
snowshoeing, skiing, hiking, running, and movies.
Amy will be at Dr. David Brauer's office from February 15
through March 26 so if you happen by, be sure to say hi
and make Amy feel welcome during her stay in Malheur
county.
RE: EMT CONTINUING EDUCATION
LA GRANDE -- Northeast Oregon AHEC (Area Health Education
Center) will offer a three part continuing education
series to Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT's) at local
Ed-Net I sites.
The first broadcast is Thursday, February 11, 1999 from 7
- 9 pm PST. The program is titled "Pipes &
Organs" and will cover basic human anatomy and
physiology of the upper torso. The programs instructor is
Pat Hart, EMT-P. Pat is the EMS Coordinator for Blue
Mountain Community College, in Pendleton.
The second broadcast is Thursday, March 11, 1999 from 7 -
9 pm PST. The program is titled "Pediatric
Trauma" and participants will learn about new
techniques, how to treat pediatric trauma and discuss
some case reviews. The instructor is Lesa Cahill, BSN,
EMT-P.
The third broadcast is Thursday, April 8, 1999 from 7 - 9
pm PST. The program is titled "Airway Management
& Improvising in the field", the first part of
the session will cover basic anatomy of the airway and
managing that airway. The last part of the session will
cover what is and is not acceptable improvision in the
field. The instructor is T.R. Hilton, EMT-P. T.R. is the
director of the Grant County Ambulance in John Day.
Pre-registration for each broadcast is required to have a
site connected. The fee is $15 per person, contact
Northeast Oregon AHEC at 541-962-3801 to register.
