Health Careers Day

What is Health Careers Day?
It is opportunity for your community to receive $1,000 to create a Health Careers Day event!

This is an offer to award $1,000 to seven communities in northeast Oregon for the purpose of creating Health Careers Day events or experiences. The same level of funds may be applied for to create a longer health careers focus in the 2008-2009 school year.

Why are we making this offer?
To help communities in northeast Oregon work with us in achieving our top five work areas for health careers education.

In February, 1996, a group of teachers, parents, youth agency representatives and one very dedicated youth, told us our top five work areas for health careers education need to:

     1) provide health career information at an elementary or middle school level.
     2) provide role models/mentors from the health care business community.
     3) assure hands-on student health career education activities.
     4) give youth out-of-class experiences in health career education.
     5) create health career education networks with the community.

In response to those five work areas, we make Health Careers Day awards each spring.  The $1,000 awards are made to groups in northeast Oregon counties to create a Health Careers Day experience sometime the following fall.  The awards are competitive as only seven awards will be made in a 12 county region.

The $1,000 funding can be used for Health Careers Day planning, teacher release time, creation of experiences for students, and feeding students, parents, and/or teachers on that Health Careers Day, etc.  The funds may be used for whatever is needed to create a quality health career education experience for youth in your community.

How to apply?
Any public organization, which normally works with youth, can apply for funding as long as they provide letters of participation from at least two other entities in their community and/or county.  PREFERENCE will be given to those who cover a broad geographic area with their application. Funding is for one community per county unless the community is over 9,000 in population or the next closest community in the county is at least one hour drive away.  Think creatively, you can even work with your local Farm Bureau and/or Extension Office!
